Shangri-La (香格里拉 xiang ge li la) is located in the north of Yunnan province and on the Tibetan plateau. Its name originates from James Hilton’s book, Lost Horizon, and refers to a fictional utopian place located high in the mountains of Tibet.
It is not much different from reality – A feeling of openness overcomes you when you step into this land of wide grasslands, snowy mountains and alpine lakes. Apart from pristine scenery, the main attractions here include the largest Tibetan prayer wheel in the world and Songzanlin monastery that is also known as the little Potala palace.
